Beginnings

After reading Adesola’s blog I have been reflecting on my professional/personal beginnings.

My official beginning in teaching began fresh out of college in 2006 aged 20. I was asked to come along and teach the teacher's of a local dance school  ISTD Advanced 2 Tap.

My energetic beginning came with the pressure of teaching older and more experienced teachers. It gave me a sense of achievement when the exam results saying 'Merit' on them came through the letterbox.
This led to me becoming more involved with the school. My hours were increased and I started to choreograph and participate in their bi annual shows.

Then came the effective beginning. 'All good things must come to an end'. The principal who had ran the school sold up. This led to many changes within the school and in turn led me to shift into my next official beginning........ The start of 'Tap to Toe Academy of Dance'  www.taptotoe.co.uk
owned and run by myself since 2013.

As previously mentioned in Adesola's blog regarding performances.

As a musical theatre teacher/nerd I regularly see a show at least once a month. One that springs to mind and stands out to me is 'Blood Brothers' written by Willy Russell. I have seen this show 5 times!
*spoiler alert* The start of the show is the end of the story. This entices the audience as they are gripped from the start and unaware of the 'official beginning'.

Two other shows to take into consideration are If/Then written by Tom Kitt & Brian Yorkey and Our House 'The Madness Musical'. These shows are similar to the popular film 'Sliding Doors' starring Gwyneth Paltrow. The idea is 'Two Paths', your life will change based on missing a train and getting on the train. So in these shows you technically have 2 official, 2 energetic and 2 effective beginnings.
This again keeps the audience on their toes and brains engaged and locked into concentration. You can see in the picture below the left side is if she met a guy and got married. She is also wearing glasses so that in the performance you can spot the difference between the paths. The right side is her as a singleton with no glasses. In theory we could have all been on a different journey if we hadn't applied for this course or missed that audition. Life as quoted below is full of possibilities.

To sign off. My personal beginning started in 2006 after officially getting diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.
My energetic beginning was having to rethink and relearn a new path in life, the ISTD DDI, DDE, LIC and now the MAPP.
My effective beginning is maybe yet to come......

  1. Hi Jade, A really interesting blog! Although I am on module 3, I still see the course as a new beginning because each element provides a different insight into my practice. Module 1 for me was the beginning of a huge reflection process that helped me to grow enormously.
    Good luck with everything.
