Sterotypical Academic

Hello Everyone!

I really enjoyed our call session last night 'Knowing and Learning'. I can safely say I don't know what 'Ideokinetic' is but I know I shall certainly try and learn about it. This is what's great about the conversation, the learning is unpredictable and on going. During our chat 'writing/speaking' academically came up and Helen hit the nail on the head 'What is academic?'
This almost lifted a weight off my shoulders. Myself and others class academic as posh speaking, big word using clever clogs, which led me to thinking like I'd have to type like that. I am no shying flower and have confidence to speak but to type was another matter. I now feel that this part of our chat has made me think that 'yes' I am academic in my knowing and learning. Just because I didn't know what Ideokinetic was it doesn't make me thick. It opens up my learning to new possibilities.
I had already put down 'communication' as an AOL of mine and now feel I can add more to the topic.

I also felt quite empowered to add my ideas and knowledge. Agata's question 'Ways how we share in our bodies? How do we transmit it verbally or other ways to communicate this?' my input was a non verbal approach about improvisation, music choices and allowing the kids to choose.
Agata's discussion allowed me to then think how would I translate this more verbally so I think I'll explore this further in my AOL. Jesse also moved onwards with the topic saying 'someone watching dance won't always get a written text, portraying dance as a different medium to words'. I thought this was a great way of describing from Jesse and resonated in what I also think.

Helen's point of moving away from 'question and answer' I will try and not do this in our next discussion. You really don't realise sometimes that you are looking for acceptance instead of just discussing and engaging.

To sign off, as a Musical Theatre lover a quote from the main character of 'Seussical The Musical'.

  2. Hi Jade, nice to read your blog and it is so true, that this discussions seem to lead to discovering new things or seeing something "old" in a new way. Your input about thinking of music as another way of communication has accompanied me all day, so thank you for that!

  3. Hey, if this helps, I only learned about "ideokinetic" by fluke. It is mentioned in Anna Paskevka's book "Both Sides of the Mirror" (page. 28). I learned in Module 2 through reading the "Writing philosophy a guide for Canadian students" (Vaughn, Lewis and McIntosh Jullian Scott)in Module 2 and learned that that when communicating to others the communicator needs to be as "clear and concise" as possible, which as a bi-product I have realized leads to bigger, and more obscure sounding words. In real life people refer to me as 'Princess the Redneck Ballerina' due to the fact that i grew up in a small logging town in British Columbia, Canada. I have to say my vocabulary used to match the geographical location and associated culture. I don't listen to myself often, so I would assume that I still sound the same most of the time!

    1. Hey David! Thank you for your response and the book idea. I just read a few pages and came across ‘Sweigard’ then I found this video. I learn better by doing rather than reading and it all makes sense now so thank you so much! I’m going to try it in class tomorrow :) Thank you for teaching me something new.
